Even though Italy was a former ally of the triple pact, they backstabbed Germans and Austrians and joined to Entente in 1915. The war generally took place in the Eastern Alps of Italy. But the Allied Powers were unable to advance from the Alps and the Austro-Hungarian army was destroyed. This resulted in the separation of Austria and Hungary. The bloodiest battles of the war were in the Isonzo River, where 11 major battles took place.
Wars of the Isonzo and other battles
On May 25, 1915, the Central Power forces launched a campaign against Italy with an army of 115,000 men, consisting of 13 cavalry divisions, and 356 guns. Italy, on the other hand, formed a defensive line with a total of 225,000 army consisting of 111 cavalry divisions and 700 guns. But with the advantage of being superior in all respects and given the defensive position, the Italians achieved the first victory.
In the Battle of the Isonz,o Austria-Hungary triumphed despite their small numbers, and the same happened in the 3rd Battle of the Isonzo. The 11th Isonzo victory was inconclusive. Having suffered a heavy defeat in the Battle of Caperetto, the Italians retreated and began to develop their strength again, but the same did not happen for the Central Powers because resources were exhausted. Victory in the Battle of the Piave River, the Italians withdrew, squeezing their forces in the Italian Alps, and began the invasion of Austria-Hungary.
